The salivary glands (SG) are organs attached to the first part of the digestive tract. Because they are anatomically and physiologically related to the mouth, these exocrine glands can be considered part of the stomatognathic system. Saliva performs various important functions, and alterations in its quantity or quality predispose to the occurrence of various pathologies. Among healthcare professionals, there is a perception that SG diseases are uncommon. However, this perception is due to the widespread contact of problems with these organs across various fields of knowledge and the difficulty in distinguishing some clinical pictures from other pathologies, such as dentoalveolar or oropharyngeal pathology.
The dispersed approach to GS means each practitioner encounters a smaller number of cases. On the other hand, confusion with problems in topographically close structures is responsible for underdiagnosis, which—despite the recognition of salivary pathology—can lead to inadequate treatment or persistent clinical status. To achieve a correct and timely diagnosis and targeted and effective therapy, avoiding unclear or protracted situations, knowledge of the fundamentals of GS clinical practice and identification of the most common and important presentations are essential. Equally crucial is staying up-to-date on treatment options, particularly the more conservative ones.
› Review the semiology and imaging of the SG
