Mark McGurk | Maxillofacial Surgery, London (United Kingdom)

Born in Africa and schooled in Zimbabwe. Qualified in Dentistry (1976) and Medicine (1984) at Sheffield University. Appointed Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Guy’s Hospital; London, in 1992. Moved to the head and neck unit at UCL in 2016. Main research interests are in clinically applied research and he helped pioneer a number of developments in minimally invasive head and neck surgery including intra-oral distraction osteogenesis, minimally invasive salivary gland therapy, extracapsular dissection, he ran the European Sentinel Node Trial and advanced the medical management of ORN and odontogenic tumours. Current research involves generating 3D models from MRI scans showing the facial nerve passing through the parotid gland. This makes AR assisted parotid surgery a reality and ushers in an age of personalised parotid surgery.

Internist with a clinical focus on complex and difficult diagnosis. His practice has progressively centered on Clinical Immunology, particularly systemic autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases as well as immunodeficiencies. His work spans both public and private practice. A clinical and translational researcher, his research uses the model of SLE – systemic lupus erythematosus to cover topics ranging from biomarker profiling to the impact of social determinants of health. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications, presented at major national and international congresses. He collaborates closely with patients and their associations, including Lupus Europe where he is part of the Young Doctor Advisory Board. Passionate about teaching and mentoring, he is also an invited Assistant Professor at ICBAS School of Medicine – University of Porto.
